Small Solutions Big Ideas is a non-profit 501c3 organization rising from the excitement about technologies and the potential to bring communities in Africa and other developing countries from isolation and ignorance into connection with the rest of the world.

We were enamoured by the little green and white XO laptop developed at the MIT Media Lab and distributed by the One Laptop Per Child Foundation headed up by Nicolas Negroponte.  Despite the challenges, the promise of Negroponte's mission to put laptops in the hand of every child only inspires us to believe that every child deserves to have this kind of power in their own hands.

Alan Papert's brother, Seymour,  wrote Mind Storms in 1984 describing how computers could create a new language for learning Mathematics. This kind of innovative thinking about education is present in the design and learning tools on the XO.

Small Solutions Big Ideas approached several grassroots African charities to solicit interest in collaborating on projects using the XO in education or community programs.

We completed our first pilot with Hands of Charity last summer.  This group developed some innovative ways to use the XO in an HIV/AIDS education curriculum that engages and delights children, as well as eliciting personal sharing of the challenge to protect their lives against contracting this disease.

All the income from this auction goes directly to purchasing XOs, solar panels, internet and networking equipment, and paying for training and teacher stipends for Small Solutions Big Ideas Kenyan projects.  We are helping close to 500 children with $6000 donated to this project.

Any purchases of these auction items will be confirmed, and shipping costs added if needed.

Thank you ! Sandra, Edo, Alan, Milan and Roland
