How to spot Genuine Limoges Trinket Boxes.
An often common mistake made by new collectors when they look for Limoges porcelain trinket boxes or pill boxes is not realizing that Limoges is a city in France, not a brand name or the manufacturer of porcelain (porcelaine).
Presently, there are only a few factories actually still making trinket boxes out of Limoges Porcelain. Those companies produce trinket boxes in their company name and also for other companies who have paid to have an individual trademark and/or name to the boxes in order to sell on as their own brand.
Using Limoges as a manufacturer, instead of the actual company making the boxes, is a trick used purposefully by some sellers and innocently by those who don't really know the background of their products, to use inappropriate keywords when trying to sell items that are not actually made of Limoges porcelain. In fact, Limoges porcelain is made from clay that comes from Limoges.
Many areas of France produce fine porcelain, although Limoges is world renown for its exquisite, fine china. If the item you are looking at has been described as a Limoges trinket box, then it will have a stamp or written label to indicate such. If it is only signed by an artist, it may be from anywhere. If it is described as being a Limoges porcelain trinket box from France, and does not have Limoges on the box, then it is not made of porcelain from Limoges.
