BLOXBOOKS

Hello and thank you for visiting, I have been selling online for about 8 years now, most of those years I was a business seller, now I am clearing a large selection of books, some stamps and a few other things that my son and I have collected over the years.
I check online several times a day and try to post any bought and paid items the same day or the next morning. If there is any problem with anything you buy from me, contact me and I will do my very best to sort all issues.

eBid works just like other auction sites and you can pay online with Paypal and Google Checkout.
You can Join eBid HERE It's quick, it's easy and it's free!

Book Condition

Readers Copy

This term will be used to describe books that have defects such as, knocks, cover rubbing, shelf wear, stains, tears, inscriptions within the book, stickers and labels added, but will have a description of faults,G,Fair and poor will also apply to Readers Copy to give a better impression of the over all condition.Scare,Rare and collectable books will normally appear in the list below with a description of faults. A book that is for example 40 years old, and is lightly read with a good shape and complete would be described as good/good plus, but the same book reprinted 2 years ago in a similar condition may only get a VG Readers copy.

As New

I only use when the book is in the same immaculate condition as it was published. There can be no defects, no missing pages, no library stamps, etc., and the dustjacket (if it was issued with one) must be perfect, without any tears.

Fine

(F or FN) - Approaches the condition of As New, but without being crisp.I use the term Fine, when there are no defects, etc., and if the jacket has a small tear, or other defect, or looks worn,or a finger print/smudge mark, these will be noted.

Very Good

(VG) - Describes a book that does show some small signs of wear - but no tears - on either binding or paper. Any defects Will be noted.

Good

(G) - Describes the average used worn book that has all pages or leaves present. Any defects will be noted.

Fair

- Worn book that has complete text pages (including those with maps or plates) but may lack endpapers, generally ex library will get a fair especially if the fep page is roughly ripped out, half-title, etc. (which will be noted). Binding, jacket (if any), etc., may also be worn. All defects must be noted.

FOXING

Foxing is the brown spots that can be found on the pages of books, generally foxing is found in older books, the foxing can vary between a few ghosts like spots on the first few pages to dark brown spots throughout the pages of the book. They may be faint and only appear on the first few pages, they may only be sporadic at page edges (these may be due to finger contact and appear in no other places)or a severe amount of foxing may cause problems in viewing the text.In the extreme a book can be ruined

Foxing is a common sight in many old books. Old American editions seem to be a little more prone ( Some of them)because of small amounts of rag content fibre. It is true to say that regional pulping and paper manufacture all have their own unique signatures, and for me that is an aesthetic appeal of books.

Foxing will be noted in book descriptions, There are several reasons why foxing occurs in books, and the amount of foxing can also have several reasons.

The manufacture of paper in the past was less uniform than now, acids were added in the pulping process to help break down the wood fibres, and the overall distribution of iron salts and other impurities though out the finished paper meant that some areas were more at risk from "Foxing" when the conditions became right.

Just the natural oils from your fingers can be just the thing needed to begin the foxing, this and the organic acids released by the fungi(fungus spore just drift carried in the air so there is no avoiding them, but such spore are only activated in the right conditiond), plus chemical action between the iron impurities (iron hydroxide and iron oxide) in paper, can all contribute, the storage of books and humidity have an impact also.

Book storage can be a major factor that can cause various problems. Avoid shelves or bookcases above or by a radiator, books on shelves by a non internal wall may condensate at various times of the year, moisture is drawn into page edges even when books are not in direct contact with a wall, apart from outer page edges swelling and giving a bloated look, moisture may cause mould to grow, most common on leather or imitation leather bound books.
This is just a general overview I will added more detailed descriptions over time.
