Racehorse breeders have always been searching for the elusive key to success in what is certainly a very inexact science and this is what makes it all so fascinating.  Many theories and systems have been propounded and followed but all too often have proved flawed, while the majority of racehorses are the result of their breeders simply following a hunch.

In PATTERNS OF GREATNESS, Alan Porter does not promote a system to follow but by looking further back into pedigrees than do most breedersm, he shows that the few most successful offspring of a stallion nearly all share certain vital concentrations of the same blood while the vast majority of all those with less ability do not.

When a great horse emerges, breeders can now study its pedigree in depth and send to its sire a mare with the ingredients in her pedigree to achieve those vital concentrations and produce their own champion.
