Auction Description

London & South Western Railway
Shoulder Reading Lamps, Glass Shades,
1901-1908 Sleeping-Cars

Two antique glass shades from Shoulder Reading Lamps of the type fitted to Sleeping-Cars (Sleeping Saloons) of the LSWR railway 1901-1908. Apparently fitted at the bedhead in each sleeping compartment.

Bought in Gloucestershire about 40+ years ago for my collection (there were 4 but unfortunately two got broken) I was told they came from a LSWR Sleeping-Car. I have no proof or provenance but believe them to be genuine.

They appear to be of moulded glass (with a few imperfections), asymmetric in shape, with 5 raised ribs down the front, and a narrow one (probably from the moulding) at the back. The inside surface of the glass is misted fading somewhat towards the bottom.

Dimensions: Height at front 164mm, at back 103mm. Diameter at top 78mm, at bottom 147-153mm (slightly elliptical). The angle of the bottom edge in relation to the top is approx. 45 degrees.

There are one or two rust marks on the top edges presumably from contact with metal fittings or clamps. The edges have a slightly roughened feel. There are no cracks.

Sold (two shades as one item) as pictured and described, but I cannot provide any
documentation as to authenticity.
