FLYING PICKETS - Strike Diary
Commissioned and Edited by BRIAN ELLIOTT
Bruce Wilson’s strike diary is an honest and action-packed account of what life was like for five young miners on front-line picket duty during the longest and most bitter industrial dispute in modern times: the 1984/84 miners’ strike. As we approach the 25th anniversary the historical importance of this book becomes even more relevant.
Bruce and younger brother Bob, along with mates Shaun, Darren and ‘Captain’ Bob crammed themselves into an old banger or ‘battlebus’ and - by various means - avoided police barriers and obstructions to get into Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and elsewhere (well at least most of the time) in order to express their views, support their Union in a country in which they believed should be free.
Any former striking miner will find the book an evocative and compulsive read, as will their families and friends. Bruce was a Silverwood (near Rotherham) miner, as were his mates, apart from Captain Bob who worked at Cortonwood whose planned closure sparked off the main dispute. There are many previously unpublished illustrations in a book that has received excellent reviews in the local press.
