The authors had long felt the lack of a complete and satisfactory list of the birds of the world, so in 1972 they began the major task of preparing one for themselves.
Only once in the previous 40 years had a full checklist going beyond specific level been attempted. This [Checklist Of The Birds Of The World] was begun in 1931 by J.L.Peters and remains incomplete although it is an important taxonomic work as well as being regarded as a classic document of its kind.
In this book, the authors attempted to produce a list of the birds of the world down to subspecific level which is up to date and accurate [at time of publication- Ed] and includes the geographic distribution of each subspecies as well as the common name where possible.
Thus, the authors hoped to encourage ornithologists to appreciate that many species of birds vary across their geographical ranges and to increase their awareness of the taxonomic system of orders, families, genera, species, and subspecies which they believe to be important for a better understanding of the study of birds.
This is a valuable reference book for the working ornithologist as well as a handy volume for the world-ranging bird-spotter.
