Attractive original print illustrating the Blood Pheasant. In good condition with adequate borders for framing (as shown). Very attractive when mounted and framed.

General Information: Chromolithography - The first true multi-colour printing process prior to which hand colouring was the norm. The process is a form of lithography (printing from stones). In lithography the surface of a stone is smoothed, washed and dried. A drawing in a greasy chalk or ink is then made directly onto the stone. The stone is wetted and then ink is applied. The ink is attracted to the greasy image but is repelled by the wet stone. The image can then be transferred to a sheet of damp paper. More sophisticated images can be applied to the prepared stone by means of transfer paper. In chromolithography a succession of different stones are used to apply different colours to a single print. In this way a coloured picture can be built up. The process was commonly used in book illustration during the later half of the nineteenth century.
