Sir Arthur's account of his life as Administrator in the Gilbert and Ellice Islands in the Pacific can be truly said to have something for everybody. It is a gay account of years spent amongst fishermen and fighters, true lovers, sorcerers, midwives, story-tellers and poets; amongst noble-hearted islanders who claim descent from the Pandanus tree of the Lord of Heaven. In the foreground of this personal and utterly charming narrative are adventures strange or terrifying: the stories of the Islanders, the missionaries, and traders: tales of terror and tranquillity, gaiety and tragedy, of the ludicrous and the decorous and the adventure of life and death.
