Avebury is one of Britain’s most important neolithic sites, which has been explored ever since the 17th century.
The stone circle is the largest in the World but the Avebury landscape includes many other important neolithic monuments, and these are brought together in this book -

• East & West Kennet Long Barrows
• The Sanctuary and The Avenue
• Silbury Hill
The emphasis throughout is on the landscape of the area which gave rise to these vast ceremonial monuments and on the lifestyle and economy of the farming communities which emerged about 4000 BC and flourished until the birth of the Bronze Age over 2000 years later.
In particular the reader is introduced to the elusive world of neolithic beliefs and ritual.
