THE
EAST COAST MAIN LINE
SINCE 1925
AUTHOR: Kenneth Hoole
PUBLISHED: Ian Allan Ltd, Surrey. 1977
FORMAT: Hb, 128pp, illustrated
CONDITION: Used...ex-library stock, so expect library stamps / marks / stickers.
Dust-jacket, rather worn & creased.
Book - obviously been a popular choice over the years, so there’s
the odd mark, nothing drastic. Its also printed on that shiny paper
which can occasionally mean pages sticking together - as evidently
happened between pages 92/93, resulting in a small tear on each
when they were parted. Happily, its occurred on pages of photos,
and doesn’t really notice too much. Apart from that... generally in
good, sound condition.
The five decades prior to publication of this book in the 1970s saw a remarkable transformation of train services on the East Coast Main Line’s middle section, between Doncaster and Newcastle.
In 1925 Pacific power had only just begun to make its mark on the principal express services and maximum speeds in excess of 75 mph were uncommon. Secondary main line stopping and branch line passenger services were frequent and sported a fascinating variety of motive power.
By the 1970s the Deltic diesel-hauled Inter-City expresses ran long stretches of the journey at a continuous 100 mph, and the 125 mph High Speed Train was just around the corner.
Such stopping and branch passenger services that survived were mostly covered by standardised diesel multiple-units.
No observer kept closer watch on this transition than the author, the premier historian of all railway things North Eastern. From his copious records he produced a fascinating and detailed chronology, 5 years at a time, of the developing scene.
The transition from one type of locomotive to another on principal services, major changes in the allocation of specific locomotive types and the evolution of both passenger and freight services - all are recorded in a style that will absorb and delight the railway enthusiast.
The text is supported by a superb array of many rare photographs from the author’s extensive collection.
