This book describes the affair between Eamon Casey, a Catholic Bishop of Kerry, and subsequently Galway and Annie Murphy, a distant relation who came to Ireland from the U.S. in the 80's on the rebound from a broken marriage.

It describes in considerable,intimate detail the extended affair and the Bishop's subsequent denial of his responsibility for the love child from that relationship.

For those who lived in Ireland through the 1950s through to the 1980's it encapsulates the arrogance and insidious power of the Catholic Church ...Ireland was to all intents and purposes a theocracy until the 1970s when international exposure [EU membership, media access, etc] started cracks to appear. The Bishop Casey affair and yet another celebrated affair/child denial by a populist priest in Dublin added a few nails to the coffin. The dam finally burst when the extent of widespread, incipient paedophelia subsequently came to light, accompanied initially by usual arrogance, denial and pass the buck.

From a personal point of view, one wonders if Ms Murphy should have written the book. Despite her intelligence, a liberal upbringing and being particularly vulnerable at the time she arrived in Ireland, she showed considerable naivety and short-sightedness. However those of us interested both in the social history of Ireland and in seeing that such an organisation never again dictates the political and social outlook of this pleasant country are very grateful that she went to the trouble.
