This important book, written by a team of experts, sets out to examine the principles which must underlie successful support for an individual child.  Concentrating on those children with special needs due to some minor or major impairment of brain functioning, it considers the nature,cause and effect of common handicaps such as visual or hearing impairment, motor disability, communication disorders and mental handicap.  The needs for specialist and non-specialist care are outlined, stressing the importance of full co-operation, not only between parents and individual specialists, but between the parents and all the professionals concerned with the child, working together as a team.

Chapters on the importance of assessment, on the parents' viewpoint and on the brain, help to give parents a background of knowledge about their child's condition and the available services, and each chapter on a specific impairment discusses the normal development of the average child, as well as measures that can be taken to help the impaired child.
